Character Education

Our Commitment to Character

Image 18All Saints Academy is a school of character. Character education sits at the heart of our vision and shapes who we are as a learning community.

Character education is the development of the personal traits and dispositions that guide how individuals think, feel and act. These traits, known as virtues, shape moral emotions, motivate wise choices and influence conduct. Through a rich blend of explicit teaching and implicit daily experiences, students are supported to acquire, practise and strengthen these virtues over time.

What We Mean by Character Education

Character education at All Saints Academy is not a discrete subject or isolated programme. It is a whole-school endeavour, woven through:

  • Our culture and Christian ethos
  • Relationships across the academy community
  • Curriculum design and pedagogy
  • Collective worship and reflection
  • Enrichment, leadership and service opportunities
  • Partnerships with families and the wider community

Through character education, students learn to recognise what is ethically important in different situations and to act for the right reasons. This enables them to become increasingly reflective, responsible and autonomous individuals.

A Christian Vision of Flourishing

At All Saints Academy, our approach to character education is rooted in our Christian vision and our belief that every child matters equally to God. We understand flourishing to mean far more than academic success alone.

Our aim is to enable every student to flourish in school and beyond, developing the intellectual, moral, civic and performance virtues needed to live fulfilling lives and contribute positively to society.

Character education is therefore central to our vision, ethos and daily practice, shaping both what we teach and how we live and learn together.

Character Across the Life of the Academy

Through a planned and coherent approach, character education permeates all aspects of academy life:

Curriculum

Students are supported to reflect, question, debate and grow in ethical understanding across all subjects.

Relationships and Culture

High expectations, care for others and mutual respect create a community where character is modelled and nurtured daily.

Collective Worship

Regular opportunities for reflection help students consider values, purpose and the kind of people they are becoming.

Enrichment and Wider Opportunities

Students are encouraged to step beyond the classroom and practise character in real and meaningful contexts.

Our House System: Virtues in Action

Character and virtues are made explicit through our house system, which embeds shared values into everyday school life. These include:

  • Courage
  • Integrity
  • Service
  • Justice
  • Reconciliation
  • Generosity

These virtues shape expectations, behaviours and relationships across the academy, supporting students to grow in self-awareness, responsibility and respect for others.

INVOLVE and Cultural Capital

Through our INVOLVE and Cultural Capital programme, students are given rich opportunities to practise character in action.

These include:

  • Leadership roles and responsibility
  • Social action and community service
  • Advocacy and student voice
  • Enrichment activities
  • Inspirational encounters and experiences

Through these opportunities, students learn to know what is good, value it, and act upon it. Character is not only taught, but lived.

Developing Practical Wisdom

Central to character education is supporting students to consider the kind of person they wish to become and to make wise choices in complex and challenging situations.

Our ultimate aim is the development of practical wisdom: the ability to choose well between alternatives, informed by experience, reflection and growing ethical understanding.

Over time, students develop the insight and judgement needed to live well, act with integrity and contribute positively to the common good.

Preparing Students to Flourish Beyond School

At All Saints Academy, we aim to develop confident, compassionate and resilient young people who are:

  • Successful learners
  • Responsible citizens
  • Effective contributors to society

By intentionally nurturing character alongside academic learning, we prepare students to flourish in school and beyond, equipped with the virtues they need to lead good lives and serve others well.
